Santa Cruz County Fair
There aren’t many better ways to mark these last weeks of summer than with a county fair. And though the luxurious vacationland of the Westin La Paloma may seem worlds away from an old-fashioned fairground, we do give you easy access to one delightful Tucson-area example.
The 102nd annual Santa Cruz County Fair takes place from September 15 through the 17th at the fairgrounds in Sonoita, a pretty hour’s drive south of the resort.
Livestock Shows, Reptile Exhibits, and Equestrian Events: A County Fair Survey
The three-day schedule comes jam-packed with classic county-fair delights. Naturally, part of the centerpiece of the fair is the varied 4-H and FFA expositions and events, including a range of livestock and dog shows. The “Bounty From the County” tent will host a farmers market and craft vendors, while the diverse displays of Pioneer Hall will include a quilt room and a reptile exhibit.
You’ll see some gorgeous steeds and impeccable horsemanship on display as well, including the equestrian spectacle of gymkhana on Saturday in the Main Arena.
And then there’s all the live entertainment razzling and dazzling the crowds. The Ramada Stage will welcome a slew of fine musicians: Mariachi Plata, Mike Karr and the Blue Grass Extravaganza, the Grasslands Band, and others. Friday night’s headliners are the shaggy, four-legged gaggle of Davis’ Muttley Crew (as seen on America’s Got Talent), while at 2:30 PM on Saturday, Thom Sellectomy (of nearby Patagonia, Arizona) will show off his unbelievable sword-swallowing skills interspersed with some comic anecdotes and assorted stunts. That circus-worthy action comes followed up at 3:30 by the Santa Cruz County Fair Talent Show and, at 6 o’clock, the always-engaging 4H/FFA Awards.
Throw in plenty of good food, carnival rides, and all manner of other fairground fun, and you’ve got the recipe for plenty of good times in the Sonoita sunshine. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6 through 12, and free for the little ones under 6.
