Light in the Sky Lantern Festival

Autumn is a lovely time to visit Tucson—and, of course, there’s no lovelier or more luxurious place to enjoy the desert fall than the Westin La Paloma. Our ravishing resort, spread against the foothills of the Santa Catalinas, has everything you need for a “shoulder-season” escape: from first-class on-site dining opportunities to a suite of recreational activities (including the pleasures of our 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course) and exceptional spa and wellness services.

Though you could happily spend your vacation entirely on our picture-perfect grounds, autumn also tempts with an array of Tucson-area events, and one of the seasonal standouts is the Light in the Sky Lantern Festival.

This year’s lantern gathering takes place on Saturday, October 21 at the Pinal Fairgrounds, just about an hour northwest of our Sonoran Desert paradise here at Westin La Paloma.

The Light in the Sky Lantern Festival

The Light in the Sky festival sees both locals and out-of-towners gathering for sundown revelry and quiet reflection alike. Flickering campfires, oozing s’mores, live music and other performances, face-painters and balloon artists, lots and lots of dancing—there’s much to delight here on the fairgrounds.

Rising Lights

The main event, though, is the launching of thousands of illuminated lanterns into the Sonoran Desert night sky. Besides serving as an unforgettable spectacle, those ascending beacons also come fired with deeper meaning: symbols of good luck, memorials to lives lost, messages of resilience or mourning or love or anything else festivalgoers feel moved to experience.

Lest you worry about the environmental impact of all of these floating lanterns, rest assured that not only are they biodegradable, the vast majority are tracked down and collected by an army of dedicated “Lantern Chasers.”

You can purchase tickets for the Light in the Sky Lantern Festival right here. Festival organizers recommend bringing chairs or a blanket for setting up your fairgrounds perch, warm clothing against the evening chill, and some cash or a credit card to avail yourself of the refreshments food and beverage vendors will be offering. (You aren’t allowed to bring in outside eats or drinks.)
